The series 2, one-issuance card - one of the very rarest artworks in the Rare Pepe blockchain collection - went for 350,000 Pepecash at a live auction held during the Rare Digital Art Festival in New York. The value at the time of sale was around $35,000, making HOMERPEPE the most expensive Rare Pepe of all time. It comes just days after a new record had been set at the 'WTH Auction House', a Telegram auction channel where PEPEPIZZA went for 320,000 PEPECASH. Until then, JONGPEPE, a 1 of 3 issuance, had remained the most valued when it sold for just under $8,000 in July 2017.
The momentous sale marked the culmination of a day dedicated to rare digital art, where innovators in the blockchain art market met to exchange ideas and share content. The festival was organized by rareaf.com. Rare Pepe Wallet dev Joe Looney was among the speakers, as well as founders of Crypto Kitties, Spells of Genesis, and representatives from a wide variety of art-based blockchain projects. You can read about DJPEPE's involvement at the unique event here.
The milestone Rare Pepe moment at the auction which ended the day's festivities certainly garnered attention, and struck up a lively crowd - although reportedly staff from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Sotheby’s Institute of Art sat silently. The event demonstrated plainly that there is an emerging, enthusiastic market for digitally based rare art on the blockchain, which perhaps the big players in the traditional art world have so far not quite caught onto.
